Red Flags
Before we go over what a test and inspection consists of, you should know what to look for when it comes to your automobile’s battery. This power source should be able to adequately start your engine when you turn the key in the ignition. If it is not capable of this, then it is very likely that you have a battery issue. Also, the power source under the hood is responsible for keeping the lights and entertainment systems running. Flickering components can indicate a need for a new energy supply. We can’t forget to mention that a failing battery can accumulate excessive amounts of corrosion on the terminals. This presents itself as a light-colored powder that accumulates on the component.
Test
If you have experienced any of the aforementioned red flags while perusing Norman, then you should get a battery test at our location soon. When you visit us, our technicians will use a volt tester to determine the current charge of your component. This number should be around 12.6 volts, which is known as the resting voltage. If it is significantly lower, then you run the risk of not being able to start the engine. If it is much higher, then it may do damage to other components in the vehicle. However, we won’t recommend a replacement if it has the ability to hold power properly. Even if it’s low, we can simply charge it up for you as long as the component is in good condition!
Inspection
Regular use will cause car batteries to wear out, so be sure to replace them about once every three to five years. To determine the condition of your vehicle’s component, our team is able to perform a basic inspection on your behalf. That way, we can check for corrosion and rust on this part. The presence of such substances isn’t a guarantee that you need a new battery, but it isn’t a great sign. Also, we can look for bulging in the sidewall, which means that the inner workings have swollen with age. If your auto is low on power despite a quality battery, then we can check for other problems, such as a light that won’t turn off as you drive down Robinson Street. Use our Ask a Tech form if you have any questions at all.
